My Chromebook doesn’t power on:
Your school-managed Chromebook has been charging all night and it is now time to use it in class. You open the cover, hit the power button, wait a few seconds, and nothing happens. Now, you hold down the power button for a few seconds, and still nothing happens. Class started a few minutes ago, and you need to get into Google Classroom; so you close the cover, wait a few seconds, open it, and then repeat one of the aforementioned processes. And still NOTHING HAPPENS!
The screen is black, the white/amber light indicator isn’t on, and hasn’t been coming on during these past few attempts at turning on your Chromebook, you are now five minutes into your class period, and your teacher is wondering why you haven’t started today’s assignment(s). Now what?!
Well, you can just sit there and hope that your teacher doesn’t notice that you are not working on today’s assignment(s). You can bring attention to the issue you have been dealing with, which afterwards your teacher will then send you to the office for help. Or, you can try the following troubleshooting solutions to get you back on track and learning.
Problem: My Chromebook was working last period but now it will not turn on. The device has plenty of battery life left for the day.
Troubleshooting: Is the white/amber light indicator coming on when the lid is opened and/or when the power button is pushed?
Solution:
Close the cover,
Plug in your Chromebook to the power supply issued with your school-managed device,
Wait a few seconds, and
then open your Chromebook.
If the white/amber light indicator doesn’t come then hold down the power button for 5 seconds.
The device will now power on!
Problem: I have performed the steps above and the Chromebook still will not turn on.
Troubleshooting: Is the white/amber light indicator coming on when the lid is opened and/or when the power button is pushed?
Solution:
Repeat steps 1-4,
If the white/amber light indicator doesn’t come then press and release both at the same time.
The device will now power on!
Problem: I have performed these steps, the Chromebook is now on, but I have a dead battery.
Troubleshooting: Think about this: Did I see the white/amber light indicator turn on when I plugged it in to charge?
Solution:
Plug in your school-managed device and see if the indicator light comes on.
If it doesn’t, then try the other side.
Leave your Chromebook plugged in for it to charge. But keep in mind that though it is charging, it will not charge as fast as it normally would because you are using it on a dead/charging battery.
Problem: I have tried all of these steps and my school-managed Chromebook still will not turn on.
Solution: Either you or the teacher will need to submit a help desk ticket. We will then bring you a loaner device and take your issued device back with us to the tech office for further analysis.
So why does your Chromebook do this? Your school-managed device has several rest mode settings which it can go into.
The first mode is Sleep Mode. This happens when you just simply close the cover or when you leave your device cover open and not using it for a period of time.
The second mode is Shut Down. This mode happens when you select Shut Down or when you hold down the power button for 5 seconds.
The last mode is Hibernation Mode. This happens when your Chromebook has no battery life left, was improperly turned off, when it was dropped, and/or when it is prompted by hitting the hotkey command.
